Our Story

Our journey began over 35 years ago with a young professor, Dr. A. Mateen Ahmed, whose inventive spirit extended across several medical fields before finding its true focus in ophthalmology.  After moving to Nigeria in 1982, Dr. Ahmed witnessed a significant number of patients suffering from onchocerciasis (river blindness). Driven by a passion for helping patients, Dr. Ahmed devoted his research to developing innovative solutions for glaucoma and other ophthalmic conditions.

After relocating to California a few years later, he founded New World Medical, where he introduced the Ahmed® Glaucoma Valve, a breakthrough device that transformed surgical glaucoma care and set a new standard in the field. Building on this foundation of innovation, New World Medical has continued to expand its portfolio, creating the most comprehensive range of surgical glaucoma products designed to preserve vision and improve patient outcomes.

Today, New World Medical’s devices are changing lives, helping patients with glaucoma see a brighter future. With decades of experience and a commitment to ongoing innovation, we continue to develop solutions that advance vision care and serve humanity.

New World Medical’s mission is to preserve and enhance vision by delivering innovations to benefit humanity.

Global Impact

New World Medical has demonstrated its commitment to global access for over thirty-five years. Our products are available in over 78 countries worldwide with the decision to enter a market not solely based on profits but on providing access to all patients. Success is measured based on “patients served” and we  prioritize patient needs over financial metrics and partner with surgeons, distributors, and nonprofit organizations to ensure our devices reach those who need them most, especially in regions where affordability may be a barrier. Our employees are encouraged to volunteer within their local communities or participate on mission trips aimed at providing eyecare to the uninsured or underserved. For employees choosing to do this we provide the necessary time-off and financial support. We dedicate 10% of our profits each year to fund the Sidra Tree Foundation, which aims to democratize global eye care.
